What To Consider Before Booking A Session

Welcoming a newborn into the world is one of life’s most beautiful milestones. Those first days and weeks go by faster than anyone expects, which is why scheduling a professional newborn photography session within the first two weeks is such an important decision for many families. Capturing those early moments creates timeless keepsakes that families will cherish for a lifetime.

I offer professional newborn sessions either in the comfort of your home or at my private home studio in San Antonio, Texas, giving families the flexibility to choose what works best for their needs. Before deciding on your session location, here are a few important considerations:

Space Requirements

Newborns may be tiny, but the photography setup is not. Equipment includes backdrops, stands, lighting, lenses, and a posing bean bag—all of which require a clear area of at least 10' x 10'. If you’re considering an in-home session, plan for an open, unobstructed space to ensure a smooth setup.

Temperature

A comfortable, warm environment is essential for a newborn session. Maintaining a room temperature of about 80°F keeps babies cozy and helps prevent marbling in their skin. In my home studio, I use a space heater to create the right atmosphere, and I recommend doing the same for in-home sessions.

Safety

The health and safety of each newborn is always the top priority. I follow strict cleaning guidelines for all sessions, including handwashing, equipment sanitation, and wearing a face mask throughout every newborn shoot, whether in-studio or on location.

Background Noise

A full belly and soothing white noise are the keys to a successful, sleepy newborn session. In the studio, I use Alexa to play white noise to help babies settle. For in-home sessions, minimizing background noise and using a white noise machine or app can create the same calm environment.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding your baby right before the session helps them stay content and relaxed. It’s also a good idea to have extra milk or formula available just in case a second feeding is needed during the session.

Accessories

While I provide a curated selection of clean blankets, swaddles, and props, families are encouraged to bring personalized items, keepsakes, or favorite outfits to make their newborn photos even more meaningful. Sites like Amazon and Etsy offer wonderful options if you’re looking for something special to include.

Wherever you choose to have your newborn session—at home or in the studio—my goal is to create a relaxed, supportive environment and deliver images that celebrate this extraordinary new chapter in your family’s story.
